Hong Kong Shop Cats: A Reprise

Wendy Gan

There are the stalwarts. These are the cats you know belong to a particular shop (the collar gives them away) and each time you pass by, you keep your eyes peeled for them.

There are the semi-stray, semi-housed cats, who do not have owners per se, but allow themselves to be taken care of, happily colonising boxes and trolleys that surely must have been put out for their use and no one else’s.

Then there are the cats who boldly claim the pavement, confident that all humankind will acknowledge their rightful stake to the street.

There are, finally, the shy cats who love to hide. You will be shopping and then be startled to see a curled-up tabby on a lower shelf just as you are reaching for some item.

Brazen or timid, these cats live happily in a world of their own; we humans are merely incidental to them. It can do us good sometimes to learn that we are not necessarily the centre of the universe, and a cute kitty makes for a most charming teacher.
